A Doctor Says These Are the Secrets to Great Sex After 65

Because there's no upper age limit on being good in bed.

Urologist and sexual health educator Rena Malik, MD creates content aimed at helping people have a healthier and more fulfilling sex life. In a new video on her channel which addresses the topic of sex in later life, Malik cites research which suggests that those who continue to enjoy sex as they get older actually "age more successfully" and tend to have a better overall wellbeing.

However, there have also been studies which indicate that satisfaction in sex generally decreases in people aged 65 or older. There are three important factors to consider here, Malik explains.

Firstly, if you are lonely or isolated, it makes sense that you might experience less satisfaction in that area of your life. "This is a real issue in the aging population," says Malik. "Many, many people are getting more lonely... It can have an impact on their health."

Secondly, people who value sexuality and the importance of an active sex life are more likely to report satisfaction. This, again, is perfectly logical. "If you prioritize your sexual health, it's more likely that you're going to be satisfied with it, or try to find ways to be satisfied with it," says Malik.

Thirdly, and perhaps most significantly, there is a gender gap to be mindful of. "Women were less likely to be satisfied," she says. "Women go through a lot of changes after menopause, and those changes can cause a lot of discomfort, dryness, and loss of libido that can all contribute to not having great desire or enjoyment when having sexual activity." Malik advises women over 65 who feel this way to see a urologist or gynecologist to talk about these symptoms, as there are a lot of options for improving libido and decreasing discomfort.

"Sexual wellbeing is so important," she says. "Just because you're over 65 doesn't mean that sex isn't important any more."
