This Guy Says He 'Changed His Life' When He Stopped Hiding His Receding Hairline

"I was finding myself in a position where I'm playing football and my main thought is my hair and not the football."

A reality for many men is losing their hair as they age. But worrying about a receding hairline at 14 years old is rather rare. That was the case for Ben, a now 22-year-old man who only recently buzzed his hair to embrace his receding hairline.

Ben tells his story on an episode of Baldcafe, a YouTube channel which encourages men to embrace balding. The young man from the United Kingdom chats with Baldcafe creator Harry James on his decision to let go of his "swooped" hairstyle.

"I was finding myself in a position where I'm playing football and my main thought is my hair and not the football," he says. "I thought, This is not healthy."

Ben says he relied on long "fringe" to hide his receding hairline, a problem he's been insecure about since age 14.

"I'd get to work everyday 30 minutes early and as soon as I'd get into work, I'd go to the toilets and I'd quickly get my hairbrush out and make sure my hair was perfect," he says.

Ben only decided to buzz his hair this month. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision after going for a run and trying not to focus on his hair. He quickly realized no one was staring or laughing at his receding hairline, as he feared they would, giving him the confidence to take the plunge.

"In my head, I'm willing to put people's judgements before my mental health, and I don't think that's something you should live by," Ben says.

Now, Ben says he notices a lot less anxiety in his daily life—and he even likes the new look. In fact, he's found himself actually looking in mirrors for the first time in years.

"Because I had not spoke about it, it built up so much that it was like the end of the world if I did open up about it because, in my head, it would show that I was weak," he says. "But really...I've show more courage speaking about it because I'm trying to be positive. Since I've done it, it's a relief more than anything."
